Blairgowrie High School Homework Policy
November 2009
Rationale
Homework is an important factor in a pupil’s learning. It contributes towards higher levels of attainment, promotes self-discipline and perseverance, and allows parents to become more involved in their child’s learning.
Aims of this Policy
Ø To encourage the use of homework at all stages and in all departments.
Ø To support continuous improvement in attainment throughout the school.
Ø To provide a clear statement of principles for the use of pupils, parents and staff.
Role and Purpose of Homework
Ø Pupils reinforce and consolidate work and skills developed in class.
Ø Preparation for new work can be undertaken.
Ø When assessments are due, pupils will revise topics.
Ø Students learn to organise their time and work schedules.
Ø A variety of study skills may be practised.
Ø Unfinished class work may be completed at home.
Good Practice in Setting Homework
Ø Homework should be relevant to the work of the class and appropriate for the stage and capabilities of the pupil.
Ø Homework should be set regularly, in order to build up and maintain good study habits, although timing may vary according to the calendar of assessments or the nature of the work of the class.
Ø Teachers should set aside time in class to issue homework and check it, and to ensure that every pupil writes it in their planners. Clear success criteria should be given, preferably in a form which the pupils can access at home (on paper or via the internet).
Ø Pupils should be given sufficient notice of return of homework in order to be able to organise their homework across all subjects and across the week.
Ø Pupils and teachers should not be overburdened by the demands of homework.
Ø Feedback should always be given on homework, whether it is marked formally by the teacher or checked in some other way. The feedback should be as prompt and positive as possible.
Ø A record should be kept of class homework completed, so that underperformance may be challenged at an early stage.
